  • Book Sales – Capitola Branch @ Capitola Mall – Our storefront Book Sale is at the Capitola Mall again this month! Lots of used books, CDs & DVDs! Where: Capitola Mall, next to Starbucks, just inside the mall’s main entrance. Proceeds benefit the Capitola Branch Library, and held by the Friends of the Capitol Branch Library.

During the month of June

  • Our Community Reads 2019 Preparation @ Aptos Library Branch — Friends of the Aptos Library Branch is looking for suggestions for their 2019 Season of Our Community Reads. Are you an avid reader? Would you like to help us with our book selection? See the details on their website here.

June 1st

  • The MAKE Lab @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 5pm) – Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ very own makerspace—The MAKE Lab—opens for business in 2018! This makerspace will offer a variety of tools for STEAM-based projects including: 3D printers, vinyl cutter, woodburning tool, soldering tool, pinback button machine, book binding machine, and a virtual reality-based sculpting and painting program. Tools are limited in quantity and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Kids 13 and under will need parental permission for some of the tools. Staff will be available to help answer questions and train patrons on more difficult tools. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library.

June 2nd

  • Summer Book Sale @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 4pm) – Gently used books, CDs, and DVDs will be sold. All proceeds will benefit the Scotts Valley Library. Sponsored by the Scotts Valley Friends!

June 3rd

  • Adult Crafts @ Felton Branch (2pm – 4:30pm) – Every Sunday.

June 4th

  • Author Talk: Dana MacKenzie @ Aptos Branch (6pm – 7:30pm) – DANA MACKENZIE, a mathematician and science writer, will talk about the perplexing fact that science has struggled so much to make sense of causation, something that is intuitively obvious even to children. Before we can make machines or bots or AIs that are as smart as humans, we need to make them as smart as three-year-olds. Dana will share some ideas on how this can be done, and what the future goals for AI should be. There will be a book signing of The Book of Why. 15% of the book sales will benefit the Aptos Friends of the Library. 

June 6th

  • Ribbon Arts Guild @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 1pm) – Join Roxanne Langan for ribbon work and hand sewing from on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the Scotts Valley Library. This program is sponsored by the Scotts Valley Friends of the Library.

June 6th

  • Felton Library Friends Steering Committee Meeting @ Felton Branch (4:00pm – 5:00pm) – Meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Felton Library. All are welcome to attend!

June 6th

  • Board in the Library @ Scotts Valley Branch (6:30pm – 8:30pm) – Unplug for a few hours to play new and exciting tabletop (board, card, or dice) games! This program is for adults 21 and older. Every first and third Wednesday. Sponsored by the Scotts Valley Friends!

June 7th

  • Special Armchair Travel & Author Talk @ La Selva Beach Branch (10:30am – 12pm) – What would you do if you could do anything in the world? Alesa Lightbourne’s son asked her this question, and two months later she was teaching in Kurdish Iraq. Her book, The Kurdish Bike, is based on her true story, especially friendships with women in a local village. Ranked five stars by the San Francisco and Manhattan Book Reviews, and winner of two gold medals in book contests, The Kurdish Bike is often compared to The Kite Runner, and is a book club favorite. Ms. Lightbourne’s presentation features photos of the real people in the book, updates on characters, and dressing up a participant for a Kurdish wedding.

  • Sand Castle Workshop @ La Selva Beach Branch (10am) – Saturday,  with Kirk Rademaker, the sand guy!

  • Friends Monthly Meeting @ Scotts Valley Branch  (6:30pm – 7:30pm) — The Scotts Valley Friends meet on the 2nd Wednesday every month in the Library Fireside Room. If you are interested in helping your local Scotts Valley Library, come to the meeting and learn how you can make a difference in your community. All are welcome.

June 14th

  • Last Day of School Party @ Boulder Creek Branch (12:30 – 5:00pm) — Come celebrate with us! There will be many fun activities throughout the event. The last day of school party is a celebration of summer. Kids can come relax, have a root beer float, play with bubbles, make a craft, build with LEGOS and sign up for SCPL’s Summer Reading Program!
    12:00 – 2:30 free root beer floats; 12:30 – 4:00 paper airplane making and bubble fun; 3:00 – 4:30 DIY crafts; 3:30 – 5:00 LEGO Club! Plus- life-sized model of R2D2 from Star Wars! Bring your camera and get a selfie with R2D2!

  • Felton Library Friends – Community Forum @ Felton Community Hall Meeting Room (6:00pm – 7:00pm) — Join us for the unveiling of design concepts for Felton Library Nature Discovery Park!

June 15th

  • Friends Monthly Meeting @ Capitola City Hall Community Room (9am -10am) –  420 Capitola Ave, For Capitola Branch Library. Held every other month on the 3rd Saturday. Come find out more about the rebuilding of the library. Public Welcome!

June 16th

  • Book Sale @ Aptos Branch (10am – 3pm) – Come browse a wide ranging collection from fiction and non-fiction to children’s books, audio books to CDs. Held on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from January through October.

  • FSCPL @ Pleasure Point Street Fair (11am – 5pm) – The Friends will have an info table at the Fair, which is this Saturday! We’ll also have coupons for a free book from our lobby or $1 off a book from our book store.

  • Genre Book Discussion Club @ Scotts Valley Branch (7pm – 8:30pm) – Meets in the Fireside Room on the last Thursday of the month at the Scotts Valley Library. The group discusses books from a different genre each month. Sponsored by the Scotts Valley Friends of the Library.
