Dear Reader —

When I’m having a rough day, I head to the downtown library and make a beeline to my favorite section: Lucky Day. It’s a table covered with bestsellers that are often hard to find. I’m an impulse reader. It’s too much trouble to reserve the books I want to read and wait for them to get in. Instead, I walk right up to the Lucky Day table and walk out with a great book a few minutes later. In the past few months, I’ve shared lucky days with novelists like Celeste Ng and Robin Sloan. I’ve traveled in time, fallen in love, and had my heart broken. I feel lucky every time.

The Lucky Day shelf is just one of a million ways that Santa Cruz Public Libraries deliver learning, surprise, and delight. Like many of you, I love how the library keeps innovating to offer new, inspiring experiences to our community. I treasure the library’s unwavering commitment to serve our whole community, day in and day out.

If you feel lucky to have the Santa Cruz Public Libraries, I hope you’ll join me in supporting the Friends of the Public Library this year on National Read a Book Day. Enjoy the celebration with a dog-eared old friend, or take a chance on something new.

The Library is making changes every day to deepen its ability to transform lives and strengthen communities. When you donate to the Friends of the Public Library, you don’t just support the library as it currently exists. You are contributing to the future. To new ways of connecting people with information and with each other. To new patrons. New programs. New conversations.

Join me on National Read a Book Day to celebrate the familiar and embrace the unexpected. You’ll make a difference in our community. You’ll support our library’s growth. And who knows? You might even get lucky.
