March 2nd

  • Our Community Reads 2019: Docent-led walk @ Elkhorn Slough (9:30am – 12noon) – Having learned about the slough in Mark Silberstein’s talk on February 12, come see for yourself what the slough is all about, and learn more about the area. Elkhorn Slough was designated a Wetland of international Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. This is a beautiful hiking spot, with largely flat trails that are perfect for an easy walk. Trails lead through marshes, woodlands and alongside tidal creeks where you can see pelicans, herons, egrets, sea lions, crabs, otters and… maybe sharks! 9:30 a.m. start time and a 10 a.m. to noon hike around South Marsh Loop, brings you back in time to either set up a picnic lunch or head to Moss Landing for local eats. Location: Elkhorn Slough Visitor Center. 

March 2nd

  • Adult Arts & Crafts Workshop @ Scotts Valley Branch (2pm – 4pm) – Learn a new style of art or crafting technique from professional artists and crafters. Each month will feature a different artist and attendees get to leave with a new project, a learned skill, and a greater sense of community. All materials and teachers are paid for by the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library. 1st Saturday of each month. This month: Clay Votive Candle Holders! Participants MUST register due to class size limits. Email hookerj@santacruzpl.org to register.

  • Ribbon Arts Guild @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 1pm) – Join Roxanne Langan for ribbon work and hand sewing from on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the Scotts Valley Library.   • Felton Library Friends Steering Committee Meeting @ Felton Branch (4:00pm – 5:00pm) – Meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Felton Library. All are welcome to attend!

Bring your favorite board game or play some of the library’s many games. No prior gaming experience is necessary. Every first and third Wednesday. Sponsored by the Scotts Valley Friends!

  • Our Community Reads 2019: Aptos High School and Delta School “Art and Poetry” Event @ Aptos High School Library (7pm – 9pm) – Students will present original works of poetry, and personal stories relating to the book. An exhibition will be on display by AHS art students and Delta School students as a competition to redesign the book jacket of The Death and Life of Monterey Bay.   • The MAKE Lab @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 5pm) – Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ very own makerspace—The MAKE Lab—is opened! This makerspace will offer a variety of tools for STEAM-based projects including: 3D printers, vinyl cutter, woodburning tool, soldering tool, pinback button machine, book binding machine, and a virtual reality-based sculpting and painting program. Tools are limited in quantity and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Kids 13 and under will need parental permission for some of the tools. Staff will be available to help answer questions and train patrons on more difficult tools. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library.

  • Our Community Reads 2019: Elkhorn Slough Boat Safari @ Dock “A” Moss Landing South Harbor (11am – 1pm) – Playful sea otters, curious harbor seals, boisterous sea lions, and hundreds of bird species abound as you explore one of California’s most spectacular wetlands aboard a stable, 27-foot, U.S. Coast Guard-inspected pontoon boat. Fun and informative for the whole family! $30 per person, only 22 seats available. Location: Dock “A” Moss Landing South Harbor, 7881 Sandholdt Road. ~ RSVP required: This event is now full!   • Friends Monthly Meeting @ Scotts Valley Branch (6:30pm – 7:30pm) – The Scotts Valley Friends meet on the 2nd Wednesday every month in the Library Fireside Room. If you are interested in helping your local Scotts Valley Library, come to the meeting and learn how you can make a difference in your community. All are welcome.

  • Our Community Reads 2019: Lunch with Steinbeck @ Aptos St. BBQ (11:30am – 2:00pm) – Lunch with Steinbeck ~ Topsy Smalley, Research Librarian and Cabrillo College Librarian Emerita will lead a fun discussion of Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Come get your literary fix and enjoy delicious barbeque, while discussing this timeless tale of Doc (based on the real Ed Ricketts) and the colorful characters who inhabit this tale of the cannery district of Monterey during Steinbeck’s time. For a taste of this Steinbeck classic click here. Bring your friends to this fun and yummy fundraising event! 15% of the proceeds will be donated by Aptos St. BBQ to the Friends of the Aptos Library.   • Book Sale @ Aptos Branch (10am – 3pm) – Come browse a wide ranging collection from fiction and non-fiction to children’s books, audio books to CDs. Held on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from January through October.

  • Felton Library Friends Open House @ Felton Community Hall (1:00pm – 4:00pm) – Check It Out! Open House for the new Felton Library and Park. Drop in to this free open house to see the latest library and park plans. Share your ideas for enhancements and programs, and learn how you can help Felton Library Friends make them a reality. Talk with folks involved in the project, use the library’s button making machine, and watch the 3-D printer at work.   • Munching with Mozart @ Downtown Branch (12:10 – 12:50pm) – A monthly series of free noon-time concerts at the Downtown Branch meeting room, feel free to bring your quiet lunch! This month features Persephone – Suki Wessling and her Jazz Band.

  • Scotts Valley Genre Book Discussion Club @ Scotts Valley Branch (7:00pm – 8:30pm) – The Genre Book Club meets at the Scotts Valley Library in the Fireside Room on the last Thursday of the month from 7:00pm-8:30pm. the group discusses books from a different genre each month. The Scotts Valley Friends of the Library are sponsoring this group. If you have questions, call the Scotts Valley Library at 427-7712.

  • Book Sales: Continuing, for Capitola Branch @ Capitola Mall – Our storefront Book Sale is at the Capitola Mall again this month! Lots of used books, CDs & DVDs! Where: Capitola Mall, between Target and the Food Court. (Note: this is a new location.) Proceeds benefit the Capitola Branch Library, and held by the Friends of the Capitol Branch Library.
