November 1st

  • The MAKE Lab @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 5pm) – Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ very own makerspace—The MAKE Lab—is opened! This makerspace will offer a variety of tools for STEAM-based projects including: 3D printers, vinyl cutter, woodburning tool, soldering tool, pinback button machine, book binding machine, and a virtual reality-based sculpting and painting program. Tools are limited in quantity and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Kids 13 and under will need parental permission for some of the tools. Staff will be available to help answer questions and train patrons on more difficult tools. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library. Held on the 1st & 3rd Friday of the month.

November 2nd

  • Friends Holiday Book Sale @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 4pm) – Get your Holiday shopping done early and stop by the Scotts Valley Fall Book Sale. Gently used books, CDs, DVDs, and audiobooks will be sold. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library.

November 2nd

  • SLV Chili Cook-off @ Felton Covered Bridge Park (9am – 5pm) – 6th Annual SLV Chili Cook Off on Saturday, November 2, at the Felton Covered Bridge Park will benefit Felton Library Friends, providing enhancements and programming for the new Felton Library and Nature Discovery Park. A dozen chili chefs will compete for prizes, with tastings beginning at 1 pm. Live music, drink sales and tasting kit sales begin at 11:30. Tasting kits are $5 and include four tasting tickets and one People’s Choice ticket. Enjoy local bands, craft beer and wine, and a raffle with separate drawings for valuable prize packages from local businesses and Bay Area sports teams!

November 2nd

  • Adult Arts & Crafts Workshop @ Scotts Valley Branch (1pm – 4pm) – This month: block printing! This workshop series for adults features a different art or craft every month. Discover your new favorite hobby or hone the skills you already have. Attendees get to leave with a new project, a learned skill, and a greater sense of community. All materials and teachers are paid for by the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library.
    This month, participants will learn to:
    – trace an image onto a block
    – carve a rubber block with professional tools
    – use finished stamps to create cards, decorations, etc.

  • Special Event: Patience Munjeri @ Scotts Valley Branch (6pm – 7pm) – Patience Munjeri: The Role of Elders in Zimbabwean Music and Traditions, plus mbira playing. Sponsored by the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library.

  • Ribbon Arts Guild @ Scotts Valley Branch (10am – 1pm) – Join Roxanne Langan for ribbon work and hand sewing from on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the Scotts Valley Library.   • Local Authors Present: 100 Things To Do in Santa Cruz Before You Die @ Live Oak Branch (6pm – 7pm) – Four local authors: Leslie Chavez, Sara Clevenger, Dede Harrington, and Misty Oliver will talk about their new guide book “100 Things To Do in Santa Cruz Before You Die”. The list of places and activities they cover is comprehensive, fun, quirky and celebrates the top ways to connect with Santa Cruz and nearby surroundings.   • Friends Monthly Meeting @ Scotts Valley Branch  (6:30pm – 7:30pm) – The Scotts Valley Friends meet on the 2nd Wednesday every month in the Library Fireside Room. If you are interested in helping your local Scotts Valley Library, come to the meeting and learn how you can make a difference in your community. All are welcome.

  • Book Sale @ Aptos Branch (10am – 3pm) – Come browse a wide ranging collection from fiction and non-fiction to children’s books, audio books to CDs. Held on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from January through November.

  • Holiday Fair to Benefit La Selva Beach Branch @ La Selva Beach Clubhouse (10am – 4pm) – Mark your calendars and don’t miss our biggest ever La Selva Beach Holiday Fair! Over 60 unique art & craft vendors sell handcrafted goods, including handmade jewelry, cards, art, ornaments, woodcraft, books, candy, jams, honey, olive oil, soaps, plants and garden art, bags, clothing, home decor and more. The Friends of the La Selva Beach Library will be selling delicious Bake Sale treats. Enjoy lunch on site or get food to take away from two local food trucks: Rogue Pye and Ate3One. Our prize raffle will have over 50 items you can win when you buy raffle tickets to support the Friends’ library projects.   • Author Talk: A Map of the World @ Scotts Valley Branch (7:00pm – 8:30pm) – The Friends of the Scotts Valley Library are hosting a book talk with Edward Weingold, author of A Map of the World (With All Faults). The event will feature a short talk by the author, a question and answer session, plus an opportunity to purchase an autographed copy of The Map of the World. The event is free and all are welcome.   • FSCPL: Free Book GiveAway! @ Downtown Branch (12:00pm – 1:30pm) – The Friends of Santa Cruz Public Libraries receive so many books that we are giving away the books we aren’t able to sell and make room for new books. Some gems, some books only eclectic lovers of discards would like. These are also great books for Free Little Libraries! Come one come all — you’ll find some treasures!! We Appreciate Your Support! Location: Outside to the right of the Santa Cruz Library Downtown Branch entrance. FREE books from Friends of SCPL! * This event is weather permitting! *

  • Book Sales: Continuing, for Capitola Branch @ Capitola Mall – Our storefront Book Sale is at the Capitola Mall again this month! Lots of used books, CDs & DVDs! Where: Capitola Mall, between Macy’s and the Food Court. (Note: this is a new location.) Proceeds benefit the Capitola Branch Library, and held by the Friends of the Capitol Branch Library.
