Intro to the Bookstore: Local Interest Spotlight

Ever wondered what walking down the Wharf was like 100 years ago or if Santa Cruz was always considered politically “liberal”?

I discovered the answers to these questions while browsing the shelves of the Friends of the Public Libraries bookstore. For only $3, I walked away with “Santa Cruz in the Heart” by Geoffrey Dunn.

This book features a collection of stories about the expansive and somewhat turbulent history of Santa Cruz through the eyes of a diverse group of citizens.

My favorite chapter, “A Historian for All Time,” is the story of Ernest Otto. He was a journalist, writing for the Surf and the Sentinel more than 70 years, immortalizing the daily life of every crevice of Santa Cruz. He was especially influential because he looked past social and racial barriers, writing stories for many years about the immigrant Chinese population that wasn’t so warmly welcomed in most of Santa Cruz. Otto left behind a legacy, capturing “the heartbeat of the city” through his regular reports on citizens’ everyday lives. His “Waterfront” column documented the daily activities along the wharf in great detail — you can learn the amount of fish caught on any given day.

The Local Interest section always captures my attention first. Santa Cruz is known for many things: beautiful beaches, breathtaking redwoods, and of course, the Boardwalk. But while its landmarks are noteworthy, the history of Santa Cruz is an equally important part of its identity.

Look for other awesome titles in the Local Interest section. Books sell fast! Prices range from $3 to $5.
