Introducing Anna and Sydney — Getting to Know Two New (Awesome) Interns

As promised, here are short introductions to the new blog writers Anna and Sydney! Remember to check back every Monday and Thursday for posts.

Sydney’s post:

Hi everyone! My name is Sydney and I’m a new Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries intern. I have been interning and volunteering at the library for a little over a month now and I’ve already had the opportunity to meet great people and become involved with a myriad of different projects the Friends of the Library has in the works. From sorting books, to working at the bookstore, to collaborating with the other Friends of the Library interns, I’ve learned a great deal not only about the operation of the library, but also about the wonderful people who staff and support the libraries.

Outside of my work with the library, I am also a UC Santa Cruz third-year Literature major. My literature concentration is English-language, stemming from my passion for 18th and 19th century english novels, particularly the works of Charles Dickens. As well, I am a Campus News editor at City on a Hill Press, which has allowed me to not only get write weekly, but has also afforded me the opportunity to speak with and learn from a number of different people at UCSC. When not at school or the library, I enjoy reading, riding my bike, and watching everything and anything on Netflix.

I hope to combine this love of journalism and my growing appreciation for the library in order to bring some interesting posts to the blog! I look forward to sitting down and speaking with various members and supporters of the libraries, allowing their voices to be heard through these posts. In the coming months, I endeavour to give blog readers a glimpse of the various programs and events run through the library, and how you can support them.

Anna’s Post:

My name is Anna and I’m also a new Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries intern. I’m extremely excited to be helping write for this blog and tell you about all the cool things I’ve discovered (and have yet to discover) about the library.

I am currently a UC Santa Cruz second-year, hoping to major in Literature and Language Studies, with an emphasis in Spanish. I am a copy editor for City on a Hill Press, meaning I edit articles for grammar, sensitivity issues, and general coherence. In my free time, I like to try different restaurants in Santa Cruz, play air hockey at the Boardwalk arcade, and watch midnight movies at Del Mar.

I will be covering the many amazing current and future events and programs put on by the library. Expect to see lots of book reviews, fun facts, and learn about hidden gems the library has to offer! If you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know what you would like to read about.

  1. Hi Anna,

I notice that you talked about book reviews, so here’s an invitation to join The Reviewers, our staff (books, audiobooks, indieflicks) review group, which meets monthly, usually on aFriday morning. This month, we’re meeting on March 21, 9:25-11:45am, in the HQ downstairs conference room. We’d love to have you there.

If you can’t make it to that meeting, by all means, hunt me down & let’s talk about coordinating your reviews with the staff picks & other allied endeavors. My office DTN is across from the admin office–the room rilled with books (what a surprise). My email’s & I read it whether or not I’m at work.

Oh yeah, my assignment is Information Specialist with the Reference team. I’m also a longtime veteran of the publishing business (I’m a NYC native), so when you say “copy editor,” I actually know what that entails (been there, done that…).

  2. And yes, my message needed copy editing!

  3. Will you be blogging about the Spring Book Sale?
